PUPIL PREMIUM REPORT January 2015

Funding for 2014 to 2015

In the 2014 to 2015 financial year, schools will receive the following funding for each child registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last 6 years:

  • £1,300 for primary-aged pupils (This will rise to £1,320 per child 2015 – 2016).
  • £300 for children from Service families.

Schools also receive £1,900 for each pupil who:

  • has been looked after for 1 day or more
  • has been adopted from care
  • has left care under:
    • a special guardianship order
    • a residence order
    • a child arrangement order

RATIONALE

Our Pupil Premium Plan for 2014/2015 continues to go beyond making decisions about how to spend the funding and is more about going the extra mile for our vulnerable children to close the gap in attainment and progress (ref: Hants policy: “whatever it takes”).

The measure of success will be closing the gap between Pupil Premium and Non-Pupil Premium pupils in terms of Attendance, and Attainment and Progress. Regardless of context or social background, we expect our children to attain levels in line with national expectations. We have set ourselves the target of at least 82% of each cohort attaining age appropriate levels in reading, writing and mathematics by the end of the 2015 academic year.

In January 2015, 43 children are on roll.

For the academic year 2013/14 Foxhills Junior School received £36,000 in Pupil Premium funding and for 2014/15 our allocated budget is £57,100. Funding is in respect of 43 children in total, who, within the last six years, were either Looked After children (5) or eligible for Free School Meals (38). We also have 4 children whose parents are in the Armed Forces.

This Report details how we spend the pupil premium funding and the effect this has had on the attainment of the pupils who attract it.

 

Foxhills has continued to expand its investment in Pupil Premium children:

 

Provision Information

13 Support Staff (excluding HLTA) - £151,595.0

This provides one LSA in every class each morning ((No LSA Friday am in 4MG, 4JR and 5SB and

1 LSA in each year group pm for afternoon interventions.

1 X QT (0.2 – Tuesday and Wednesday pm in Y6)

Nurture  - twice each week with 2 supporting LSAs

Two qualified teachers have been employed on a part time basis in the Spring and Summer Term to take Intervention Groups in Y 6 and in Y5 for Maths and Literacy. Where progress is below National expectations or where attainment is below National, support has been put in place to accelerate progress - with an emphasis on overcoming level barriers; e.g. level 3 to 4, Level 4 to 5 etc.  After 17th May, Maths support will be focussed in Y5. 

This academic year has seen the introduction of free milk for pupil premium children (January ’15) – this now comes out of allocated funding. (All children at Foxhills have the option to purchase milk each day).

At the start of the Autumn Term, Maths “Pupil Conferencing” was used to identify children’s learning barriers in maths which in turn allows teachers and support staff to target specific needs. As a result, Wave 1 and Wave 2 teaching is more focussed (differentiated) to meet the specific learning needs of every child

Across the school there is a shift in emphasis on the type of support given to Pupil Premium children.  For example, more children from the lower school attend Nurture Group.  Also, in literacy, the focus for intervention groups in Year 3 is on phonics, whereas in the upper school there is a shift towards children coming out of class to work on their writing skills.  In Year 6, high achieving Pupil Premium children have the opportunity to be in intervention groups for Level 6 SATs papers in Reading, SPAG and Mathematics.

Maths progress across the school is being closely monitored by the Maths Leader and Reading and Writing by the Literacy Leader.  In addition, Phase Leaders meet with teachers each half term - Pupil Progress Meetings - to monitor every child’s progress and ensure interventions are in place and are effective. On completion of PPMs, Reports are then discussed and reviewed with Chris Bristow (including AEN) and further actions implemented as required.

 

Year 3 Summary

KS1 Data shows Pupil Premium children to be significantly below non Pupil Premium children in all subjects on entry to Foxhills Junior School.

At the end of the Autumn Term, internal tracking shows progress as expected and in line with non-pupil premium children.  Current small group interventions in Year 3 are in place for maths, reading and phonics.  Two children have been identified as needing additional 1:1 support in writing. Capacity to provide this is being investigated.

 

Year 4 Summary

Although pupil progress is slightly behind (3.0 /3.5) Non Pupil Premium children in reading, it is slightly ahead in writing and mathematics.  Interventions are in place and working well.  They include sentence surgery, support for spelling and handwriting, as well as interventions for maths, reading and phonics.

 

Year 5 Summary

Progress of Pupil Premium children is at least in line in all subjects (it is slightly ahead in maths).  However, Year 5 have suffered some disruption with LSA interventions during the Autumn term due to staff illness. This has since improved at the start of the Spring term.  Year 5 children will also receive a big investment of QTA support with interventions after 17th May.

 

Year 6 Summary

Although Pupil Premium progress is in line with others in maths, it is behind in reading and writing.  The new initiative this term with booster groups for reading and writing should address this, as many of the pupil children are attending these extra lessons.  Maths booster groups are also in place with a qualified teacher.
